Dalhousie College of Sustainability

Dalhousie University’s College of Sustainability commissioned me to create a series of graphics for their pilot version of their online literacy module. This module’s incentive is to excite Dalhousie students, with exciting graphics, to learn the basics of sustinabiltiy — and what that means when living in Nova Scotia.

Visual Language

As a designer, I looked at the visual language of what would entice students to stay on the web page. This included incorporating round and friendly visuals to my illustrations, earthy and bright colours to illicit happiness, funky typography to de-emphasize feelings of static information, and inclusive skin colours so every student feels represented.

Paper to Screen

It was crucial that throughout my process, all of these graphics could be reused throughout the module’s evolution. This came down to timeless styles and smart uses of formatting.

Process

Dalhousie’s Sustainability College student, Lizzie, sent me a list of terms for the online module. To bring these terms to life, I sketched a series of thumbnails and developed variations of graphics — based on the feedback I was given.
I produced colour palettes and paired typefaces that fit with the identity of the module.
